MoveDigital is Back

Thank you for your patience and your kind emails. It’s wonderful to know how much the service is appreciated.

We are in a new location and have upgraded our performance. Our feature set should be fully operational.

As always, we are interested in your feedback and suggestions.

Special thanks to the people who contributed over the past few weeks.

Silicon Valley and New Features

We kept busy this summer. MoveDigital’s big news is our move from the tranquil Eden-like setting of Carmel Valley, California to the action packed Silicon Valley city of Palo Alto, California. The change has been good for the company.

While we prepared to move and moved we also kept busy improving the service. Here’s a list of what was accomplished:

The new MoveDigital Solutions pages are up and have our new embeddable Flash player which is production ready. We are currently reserving the Flash player for internal use but expect to make it available to account holders before the year is out.

We added an additional level of privacy to accounts. There is now an option for you to disable the publisher link on public file pages so people cannot see your list of files unless you want the list exposed.

When you click share and email to friend under the pop-up menu you can now change the “Subject” line which appears in the email you send.

The pricing pages are clearer and more dramatically emphasize our key benefit with a starburst which clearly proclaims: No Monthly Fees.

You can now add your own website URL in your RSS feed for iTunes.

I believe that sums it up. Please let us know how we are doing. We always enjoy hearing how you are using the service and if you need us to improve it in any way.

Customize Your Dropbox Upload Page

Collaboration in the world of digital media requires you to be able to send and receive large files. On the left side of the browser window within your “my MoveDigital” file listing are folders. If you create a custom folder, say, “my dropbox”, you can now click on the folder name, go to “convert” and select “create branded dropbox” to make your own custom branded upload area.

If you want the files uploaded in this area to be private and only viewable by you please be sure to set the visibility to “unlisted” when you create the folder.

To personalize the dropbox you will want to add an a 300×225 pixel JPEG or GIF image by clicking the folder name and selecting “edit” and then “image”. You will also want to click “edit” and then “info & metadata” and go into the “title” and “description” fields to give your upload area your own personal messaging.

Here is an example dropbox I quickly created for the account named: “appletv”:

http://www.movedigital.com/go/appletv/d/HD4AppleTV

Please note under the “share” folder menu option you will actually get this numerical link:

http://www.movedigital.com/go/appletv/68295

but you can replace the “68295″ with “d/thenameofyourfolder”. This little tip makes the upload path easy to remember but you will still probably want it on a site somewhere so people can simply click and upload.

Please note: Our special thanks go to a user who was kind enough to call in and insist this feature needed to be in place to support one of his customers.

Customize Your iTunes “AppleTVCast” Feed

Once you are signed in as a user on MoveDigital, click the “my MoveDigital” tab and you will see a menu option titled “my account” on the left of the MoveDigital menu bar. Click “my account” and you will find an option to turn on iTunes support for your main RSS feed. The main RSS feed is located on your MoveDigital Public Page. Please note only your files with the visibility setting on “public” will be shared.

Here is the new feature: now in addition to the categorization iTunes requires, you can edit the Title, Description, Image and Author and most important the number of files associated with your MoveDigital enabled iTunes Podcast feed.

Now that the Apple TV receives files via iTunes via RSS, the term Podcast is completely out of place. Video podcasts made for the iPod do not look very good on 50″ flat screen TV’s but they can look great if the source material was shot in HD and is compressed specifically for the Apple TV in say, 960×540 or 1280×720. Shouldn’t this content be called an AppleTVCast? Or should Apple TV be called iPod TV? Yes, I am an incredible nerd.

A Podcast feed via iTunes is a great way to automate the delivery of audio or video programming you create. We use it to automate the delivery of video we create to the new AppleTV devices. The feature is not limited and may be used by clicking the “Advanced” menu item in iTunes and pasting the main MoveDigital RSS feed in the Subscribe to Podcast field. This works on both the Windows or OS X version of iTunes.

Here is a feed from the MoveDigital account “AppleTV”:

http://www.movedigital.com/rss/appletv/main.xml

You can use the instructions above to add this feed to iTunes and receive files which are specially formatted for the AppleTV box.

If you want to appear in Apple’s Podcast directory and get worldwide distribution of your podcast here are the steps once you have your iTunes compatible media files loaded in your MoveDigital account:

1. Launch iTunes
2. Go to the iTunes Store
2. Click Podcasts
3. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Submit Podcast in the Learn More area and follow the instructions.

If you need help making an iTunes compliant video file please click this link:

Special thanks go to one of our wonderful MoveDigital users who had to have this implemented right away. We’ll happily listen to your feature requests and do our best to implement them quickly.

Hi-Def Streaming Video via P2P Up Next

FOR RELEASE ON MARCH 27, 2007

MoveDigital and Neokast join forces to bring HD streaming to the masses

Through MoveDigital’s high speed online delivery service Neokast will deliver HD streaming in real-time to every broadband connection

CHICAGO, IL March 27, 2007 – Neokast LLC, which streams live broadcasts and on-demand content over the Internet via advanced P2P protocols, has formed a partnership with MoveDigital, Inc., an online digital delivery service, to provide intelligent high-quality P2P video streaming to the masses. By leveraging the power of MoveDigital’s Volumetric Network Access Technology, Neokast will offer high-def quality streaming at a cost that is dramatically lower than typical CDNs, or even grid-networks. The two companies expect the collaboration to open the door to record-breaking levels of simultaneous viewers of high quality streaming video over the Internet.

On March 15th, 2007 Mark Smith, President of MoveDigital was introduced to Neokast through an interview by Bob Cringely of the two Neokast co-founders, Adam Johnson and Stefan Birrer. The interview was posted on the Technology Evangelist website by Benjamin Higginbotham, an avid and well respected high-def streaming guru. Higginbotham stated, “I think MoveDigital’s HD distribution network is a natural fit for Neokast. Neokast is a technology that can change television as we know it. I believe MoveDigital will help enable Neokast to deliver their content to millions of consumers quickly and seamlessly.”

MoveDigital and Neokast collided last week at Pulvermedia’s Video on the Net conference in San Jose. The two companies immediately understood the benefits of collaboration. Cringely also sees the possibilities, “Neokast has the potential to change forever how television is carried on the Internet, but its greatest challenge in dealing with large scale content providers will be in going from second to third gears. MoveDigital servers can add that extra nudge needed to ensure than an HBO or an NBC’s HD content is available seamlessly — and fluidly — over the net. It’s a good combination.”

MoveDigital, founded in 1999, refined its expertise in infrastructure and file delivery by providing on-demand services for CNET’s GameSpot, CNET’s Download.com, Live365.com, Digital River and GameSpy’s FilePlanet. MoveDigital currently provides acceleration of BitTorrent downloads via a patent pending technology called P2P Smartseed. Invented by Gary Lerhaupt, the feature allows publishers to control when MoveDigital contributes torrent download acceleration based on how many seeds are currently in the mix. MoveDigital plans to work with Neokast to provide a similar service to their peer-to-peer network. As Neokast delivers higher quality files with larger bit rates, the MoveDigital network will come in to make sure users have a high quality experience. MoveDigital will explore the use of their existing patent on volumetric network access to enable Neokast to compensate peers for their contribution to the network.

The collaboration evolved from a few friendly conversations with Frank Huebbers, Lead Web Engineer at Neokast, and Noah Clemons, Neokast’s Chief Information Architect. Clemons really broke the ice when he came to the MoveDigital booth and said: “MoveDigital is very cool. These days I will only watch high-def”. Over the next day Smith met Neokast’s CFO Jim Johnson, Neokast’s CTO Andreas Schuler, and Stefan Birrer Neokast’s Chief Software Architect and co-founder. At the VON show’s conclusion Smith met with Adam Johnson, Neokast’s President and co-founder, over a meal at Gordon Biersch in downtown San Jose among the loud din of the fans watching the NCAA Road to the Final Four. “Despite the noise and the fatigue of three days at a trade show, we came to terms on how we could work together and had the Neokast software up and running on MoveDigital servers by 2am,” Smith explained.

Both Neokast and MoveDigital company philosophies intersect around the belief that everyone should have equal access to mass communication. Keeping the costs down will help advance the development of emerging production genres and eliminate the era of the mass media gatekeeper.

About Neokast
Neokast is a live video streaming platform that enables video distribution over the Internet. Users can upload live video streams from any video capture device, and they can also upload prerecorded video content from their computer. Live video streams and prerecorded videos can be viewed in real-time as they are uploaded by any number of viewers and through any normal DSL or cable Internet connection. Content publishers have the option of offering their content as free live streams, free archived streams, On-Demand, and/or Pay-Per-View. There is no limit to video length. The videos can be viewed in HD quality, depending on the capabilities of the content publisher and the viewer. Due to advanced streaming protocols within the Neokast technology, the cost of providing the Neokast service is far lower and more scalable than any other video service in existence.
